The corner looks deserted, it’s just about 7 in the morning and you can hear the birds chirping. It’s just another day in the City of Neighborhoods that most notoriously breeds hustlers and drug fiends which have inevitably labeled Baltimore the “murder capital” of the nation for many years. However, from harsh realities and crime infested environments breeds some of the worlds most riveting musical masterminds.
Meet The Black Sunn, a 20 year old East Baltimore emcee with an uncanny capability of illustrating colorful storylines coalesced with a vivid golden era sound. The young emcee is not focused on the negative aspects of his city, but does not ignore the conditions either. Providing listeners with a realistic vision of his surroundings, The Black Sunn gives you a surreal and gripping look into his every day life.
Music has always been a mainstay for The Black Sunn since his early childhood when his brother would play records in the house, as he remembers listening to Wu-Tang’s “C.R.E.A.M.” and first picking up a pen in the 4th grade. Being faced with several family deaths at the age of 10, this forced The Black Sunn to grow mentally strong at a young age. Freshman year of high school marked the real start of his career when he was first introduced to GZA – Liquid Swords and became inspired to start writing about his own life and taking music seriously. Adversity confronted him again senior year when he was kicked out of school and had to take a deep look at his future. At this point he knew he had to answer his calling and share his music for the world to hear.
In 2008, The Black Sunn released Born Alone, Die Alone, a mixtape hosted by illroots.com, which features exclusive production from Miami beatsmith, Mydus. From this point on his career began to take shape earning the respect of major blogs and fans which led to his next project released in September 2009 titled, GodSound, hosted by high-profile websites, 2dopeboyz.com, illroots.com, and local urban clothing boutique, PedX Baltimore. From this project his single “Pretty Girl Comlex” was debuted on Djbooth.net and held the #9 spot for two consecutive weeks on the Independent Charts right above names such as Royce da 5′9″ and Wiz Khalifa.
The Black Sunn was awarded “Best New Artist” at the 2009 Baltimore Crown Awards and plans to be at the forefront of the hip-hop scene in the Charm City. He is currently working on a new project which is scheduled to be out by mid 2010. This project will feature several industry producers and special guests as well.
